General Mission PDF Print E-mail

General Mission is the support of mission projects outside our community. We consider it a major priority, so much so that in the past five years more than 25 percent of our budget has been allocated to General Mission.

Gifts are made at special times throughout the year as well as when disasters strike. The One Great Hour of Sharing is a special appeal that is supported by the Katonah Presbyterian Church. It provides development aid, refugee assistance and disaster relief in more than 70 countries, including the United States. The One Great Hour of Sharing consists of three programs:

  • Presbyterian Hunger Program supports projects which not only provide food for the hungry, but address such underlying issues as agricultural development and public policy advocacy.
  • Self Development of People provides resources to groups who are in need and wish to work to overcome poverty, oppression and injustice.
  • Presbyterian World Service responds to disasters and homelessness by supporting relief and reconstruction efforts. Most recently the efforts of Presbyterian disaster assistance can be seen in the flooding in the Dakotas.

Another special offering is taken at Christmas time to support needy retired clergy and racial-ethnic colleges and universities. This represents our commitment to the youth in America as well as those who served the church well in the past.

The children of our church support the work of Heifer International, a project to combat hunger throughout the world by providing young animals and the education necessary to successfully raise them.
