A-HOME is a not-for-profit community based organization that works to strengthen Northern Westchester neighborhoods by providing people safe and affordable places to live - the foundation of a stable life. The professional staff and volunteer workers facilitate residents' independence in caring, family-like environments which strive to support the dignity and privacy of each individual. The population served includes the elderly, men and women with histories of mental disabilities and single parent families. Some of the properties are owned and managed by A-HOME while others are managed by A-HOME for town agencies.

In some homes, residents have private bedrooms with communal kitchens, living rooms, and shared bathrooms. In other properties, the residents live in studio or small apartments. In every case, residents must be capable of independent living and must contribute rent (generally about 30% of their monthly income). The need for such housing continues to grow at a faster pace than the ability to provide housing and there is a perpetual wait list.

Our Church has long been a supporter of A-HOME. One of the homes is named after Muriel Lammers, a member of our Church who was a stalwart supporter of the program.

Not only does our congregation contribute financial support, but various members have helped individual residents by driving them on errands; planting flowers to beautify the homes; shopping for Christmas presents for residents; and adopting rooms in new properties which includes painting, securing furniture, rugs, linens, lamps, window shades, curtains and anything else required to make the room livable.

We value this hands-on opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors.
