Our ongoing Adult Education Class Sundays at 8:30am in Church House Parlor The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith by Marcus Borg “The conviction: Christianity makes sense. In my own life, this conviction took time to develop…From my mid-teens to mid-thirties, Christianity did not make much sense to me. Largely for intellectual reasons, the form of Christianity that I learned in my childhood ceased to be persuasive.” “…There is a way of seeing Christianity that makes persuasive and compelling sense…The sacrifice that Christianity asks of us is not ultimately a sacrifice of intellect.” “The passion: to communicate this way of seeing to those for whom an earlier understanding of Christianity makes little or no sense. They number in the millions. Some have left the church, becoming part of…’the church alumni/ae association.’ Others remain within the church but struggle with beliefs they learned in childhood…And some, especially many under forty, have never been very involved in the church and find little in Christianity that attracts them, but often are hungry for a source of meaning and values.” If you can identify with any of these quotes and/or find them interesting, please join us for a new adult education class starting September 24, in the Church House Parlor from 8:30-9:30 am. (We will not meet the Sundays that Men’s Breakfast is scheduled.) We have some books available in the Church Office. Pastor Bill will be leading our discussion, perhaps with a bit of help from those he has recruited. If you don’t feel you can commit to reading the book, come anyway. A robust discussion of this topic requires differing opinions; we needs lots of people who can share both their opinions and our journey towards increased understanding of what it means to be a Christian. |
